Ecological Clerk of Works (ECoW)
An Ecological Clerk of Works (ECoW) provides on-site ecological support to ensure legal compliance and adherence to planning conditions during construction. The ECoW acts as a bridge between the ecological requirements of a development and the construction team — helping to minimise ecological risk, protect biodiversity, and keep projects moving smoothly.
When is an ECoW Required?
An ECoW is typically appointed when:
Planning conditions require ecological supervision
Protected species or sensitive habitats are present on site or compliance with licences or environmental legislation is required
Mitigation or enhancement works must be monitored during construction
Real-time ecological advice is needed to adapt works on site, for example when a protected species is found unexpectedly

What's the purpose of ECoW?
ECoWs are often a key component of Construction and Ecological Management Plans (CEMPs) and are recommended or mandated by LPAs.
Our Process
Review project and conditions
We assess the planning permission, ecological assessments, and proposed construction works to understand where and how ecological supervision is required.
Appoint and brief ECoW
One of our qualified ecologist is assigned as ECoW for the project. They attend site inductions, advise the construction team, and provide toolbox talks or briefings as needed.
On-site supervision and support
The ECoW monitors key activities such as vegetation clearance, groundworks, or habitat creation. They ensure that mitigation measures are implemented correctly, protected species are safeguarded, and works remain compliant with legal and planning requirements.
Reporting and communication
The ECoW maintains records of site visits, actions taken, and any required adaptations. These can be compiled into interim or final reports and shared with the LPA or other stakeholders as evidence of compliance.
What happens next?
Depending on the nature of the development and ecological conditions:
Works Continue Smoothly
With expert guidance on site, ecological risks are reduced and construction progresses without unnecessary delays.
Adaptive Measures Implemented
The ECoW can recommend immediate, practical changes to protect species or habitats without halting works.
Compliance Demonstrated
ECoW records support Discharge of Conditions and demonstrate responsible environmental management to the LPA.
