Who are your main clients?

Our Green Space team mainly works with Local Planning Authorities (LPAs) to deliver evidence based assessments to support local planning policy in relation to green space. However, we also work with other council service areas e.g. parks and countryside teams to deliver strategies such as parks and play strategies, which are focused on strategic delivery and improvements.

We also provide assessments and advice to developers to support planning applications and ensure sustainable and high quality green space e.g. through the voluntary Building with Nature standards and accreditation process, ‘mini’ open space assessments, urban greening factor (UGF) assessment or Suitable Alternative Natural Green Space (SANG) assessments.

How often should a local planning authority undertake an open space assessment, or other local plan evidence base?

A Local Planning Authority (LPA) should review its planning policies at least every five years, as required by the National Planning Policy Framework (NPPF). Several factors may influence this such as if there are areas where there is significant development, fast-growing populations or due national legislative and policy changes. If policies are outdated (e.g., due to legislative changes or local housing needs), a full or partial update may be required.

How long does it take to complete an open space assessment or strategy report?

This usually varies between 6 to 12 months, depending on the detailed project requirements. Large projects often take around 12 months, where as smaller projects can be completed in less than 6 months. We always strive to meet your project timelines and will provide clear guidance if adjustments are needed.

How much does an open space assessment or strategy cost?

The cost of an Open Space Assessment or Strategy varies depending on the specific needs of your project, including:

The size and scope of the assessment area

The level of detail required (e.g., audits, GIS mapping, policy recommendations)

Stakeholder engagement needs
