Seasonal / Consultant / Senior / Principal Ecologists

We are seeking ecologists at all levels from seasonal to principal to join our growing team based in Bath and working across the UK (mainly in the south). The job will require travel across the UK, so a driving licence will be essential, and there will be a need for overnight stays and possibly longer periods (2-3 days) away from home. The core hours will be 40 hours per week.

About Ethos

Ethos Environmental Planning Ltd is an established environmental planning consultancy based in the world heritage city of Bath and working across the UK. We are a multi-disciplinary consultancy providing decision making in relation to planning with a focus on ecology, biodiversity net gain, green space and green infrastructure.

Currently the seasonal ecologist post is being offered as a full-time 6-month contract. All other posts (consultant, senior and principal ecologists) are being offered as a full-time permanent contract, with a 6-month probationary period.

The roles in Brief

Principal ecologist (permanent, full-time contract)

The core responsibilities of the role will be:

• leading complex projects from start to finish: quoting and invoicing, coordinating habitat and protected species surveys, client liaison, project management and attending meetings;
• overseeing all ecology surveys, monitoring workflow and ensuring deadlines can be met;
• planning site visits and preparing weekly survey timetable;
• writing and checking reports and licence applications;
• coordinating training programme across the ecology department;
• seeking opportunities to streamline processes; and
• staff mentoring and appraisals.

The successful candidate must:

• Have a relevant degree;
• Be a member or eligible for membership of the Chartered Institute of Ecology & Environmental Management;
• Have a minimum of 6 years’ consultancy experience;
• Have an excellent understanding of legislation and policy;
• Have excellent IT and written communication skills;
• Have excellent verbal communications skills;
• Hold protected species survey licences, preferably bat and GCN;
• Have a flexible attitude to work and be able to work occasional long and unsociable hours.
• Hold a valid UK driving licence;

And ideally;

• Have a relevant degree;
• Experience using GIS;
• Have own car

Senior ecologist (permanent, full-time contract)

The core responsibilities of the role will be leading projects (habitat and protected species surveys, client liaison, project management, attending meetings, quoting and invoicing), writing and checking reports and licence applications. The successful candidate must:

• Have a relevant degree;
• Have a minimum of 4 years’ consultancy experience;
• Have a good understanding of legislation and policy;
• Be a member or eligible for membership of the Chartered Institute of Ecology & Environmental Management;
• Have excellent fieldwork skills;
• Hold a valid UK driving licence;
• Have excellent IT and written communication skills;
• Have excellent verbal communications skills and;
• Have a flexible attitude to work and be able to work occasional long and unsociable hours.

And ideally;

• Bat and GCN survey licences;
• Have own car; and,
• Experience using GIS.

Consultant ecologist (permanent, full-time contract)

The core responsibilities of the role will be leading and conducting habitat and protected species surveys, analysing bat calls and drafting reports. The successful candidate must:

• Have a relevant degree;
• Have a minimum of 2 years’ consultancy experience;
• Have a good understanding of legislation and policy;
• Be a member or eligible for membership of the Chartered Institute of Ecology & Environmental Management;
• Have very good fieldwork skills, particularly with experience in bat surveys;
• Hold a valid UK driving licence;
• Have good IT and written communication skills and;
• Have a flexible attitude to work and be able to work occasional long and unsociable hours;

And ideally;

• Bat survey licence;
• Have own car; and,
• Experience using GIS.

Seasonal ecologist (6-month, full-time contract)

The core responsibilities of the role will be assisting with habitat and protected species surveys, analysing bat calls and camera trap footage, and drafting simple reports. The successful candidate must:

• Hold a valid UK driving licence;
• Have good IT and written communication skills and;
• Have a flexible attitude to work and be able to work occasional long and unsociable hours;

And ideally;

• Hold a relevant degree;
• Have a season of survey experience;
• Have own car; and
• Be a member or eligible for membership of the Chartered Institute of Ecology & Environmental Management.
